"Santo" is the third single of Christina's first Spanish-language extended-play, La Fuerza and the ninth and second Spanish-language album, Aguilera. The song was written by GALE, DallasK, Josh Barrios, Christina Aguilera and Ozuna. It was produced by DallasK, Federico Vindver and Rafael Arcaute. The single was released one day before the EP release on January 20, 2022.
Background[]
In an interview with ABC News, Aguilera talked about her experience working with latin singer Ozuna and creating the song saying "That was one of the first songs that I actually heard a track for and I was like, “Oh my God, I love this song.” The hook was there. (Puerto Rican singer-songwriter) GALE was one of the writers, she’s a beautiful writer, super poetic. Really tricky with the tongue! I really worked extra on some of those lyrics, you know? (laughs) But I love the song so much! It’s something that you can feel sexy and empowered by. So, after I recorded it, I already got back to L.A. when I got an email that was like, “OK, you have to check your email, there’s a surprise.” And the surprise was Ozuna’s verse (laughs.) I was like, “Oh my God!” I was so excited for him to join the record, and he did his own thing with it. So right after I was done with the girls doing “Pa Mis Muchachas”, I went right into “Santo” with Ozuna and we shot the video right there in Vegas after the Latin Grammys. We get to embody this ethereal world of nature, hallucination and twisted darkness, but I’m being hunted by an ex-lover who betrayed me, so (laughs.) It was a really fun video to shoot and the song and the hook is undeniable." [1]
Music Video[]
The music video was released alongside the song on January 20, 2022. It was directed by Venezuelan director Nuno Gomes and shot in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It is the third installment of the album's visual story-line, a follow-up to the "Somos Nada" video, where Aguilera's lover and business partner was killed after betraying her. Now she finds herself in a magical forest of an underworld where she faces the ghost of her ex-partner seemingly haunting her. Aguilera asks her savior to "come save" her. As they dance, they exchange alluring glances and explore their mystical surroundings. The performers dance together in the sorcerous land with magical creatures, where they look tempted by their surroundings and each other. Later Aguilera — dressed in an all-red ensemble donning a flower lip ring — is seen with fairies and forest army all around her.
Rolling Stone's Tomás Mier opined that Aguilera and Ozuna "channel Adam and Eve's wild side" in the music video, and thought that its scenery resembles "dark Garden of Eden". An alternate music video for "Santo" — featuring Aguilera and Ozuna in a purple-tinted forest — was released on June 15, 2022.
Live performances[]
Aguilera performed "Santo" live for the first time at the 2022 Mallorca Live Festival, along with other songs from her ninth studio album and second Spanish-language, Aguilera. It was later included on the setlist of her promotional tour EU/UK Summer Series.
